Current Position

I am currently employed by the University of Minnesota. My actual "department" changes every week or so due to a reorganization of all technology support departments. In the new organization, I fit in thusly (at the time of this writing, anyway):

So what do I do? My time this past year has been spent mostly on the U Card project. The U Card is a replacement for the old University ID cards, with extra "features" like a calling card and an ATM card (you can get a special U account at TCF Bank). There is also a "debit stripe" which simply holds a monetary value that can be used at campus vending machines, laundry, and other things (coming soon: You Will use them to pay for printing at computer labs. And indirectly, AT&T will be the ones to bring it to you.)

I also do custom programming requests for tenants of the Web Hotel and Gopher Hotel services (centrally administered servers where departments at the U can rent space for a setup charge and a low monthly fee). I also do some housecalls for various departments when something goes awry with their computers, as well as support for other enterprise-wide Internet services, such as e-mail, the X.500 directory, and the like.

Here's a picture of Lind Hall, the building in which I work.

Previous Employment

Penn Lake Library, Bloomington, Minnesota, USA (June 1991-August 1994)

My title: "Clerk-Shelver". My mission: to put back on the shelves those books which humans (typically) had carelessly and negligently removed (either to read, or just for the sake of pulling books out and throwing them around the room. The latter was more common in the Childrens' Room.)

Of course, I also performed "related duties". In my case, I put my graphic design experience to work designing computer forms and other such things for the librarians. My crowning achievement: some fantastic looking paperback spine labels (we shelve our paperbacks in racks, grouped by the first letter of the author's last name.)

Other Kinds of "Work"

Jess wanted to see her name on this page, so I've added her. "Working" on our relationship is even more fun than "working" on the job. ;)
