Dreamless

By Chris Bongaarts

I used to be a dreamer,
But a dreamer's world is fraught
With distant possibilities
That always come to naught.
A vision of a happy future
Gripped my eager eyes,
Until she ripped my tapestry
Of coming paradise.

She left me dreamless,
Stripped of every hope.
I'm dangling from
The end of my rope,
The end of my rope.

She shredded and dismembered
All my former fantasies.
She diced and grated all my hopes
Despite my frantic pleas.
So now I'm left with nothing else
To set my sights upon.
The hopes and fears I once held dear
All fell like Babylon.

chorus

spoken:

She tore his still-beating heart
from his chest. Then, pausing
briefly to grin at him, she turned
and walked away, leaving him...

Speechless and heartless.

chorus

Abandoned in the alley
Of my decimated dream
As I lay numb my dead desires
Flow like a bloody stream.
She gouged my eyes of foresight out;
She left my spirit blind.
As I approach insanity
Darkness dissolves my mind.
